Memorial Day Weekend Happenings

New York City streets tend to lose about half its pedestrians on Memorial Day Weekend, either to trips out of town, trips to the beach, or trips to the couch to watch movie marathons. But there are still plenty of urban adventures to experience for those that are staying close to the asphalt this weekend. To help get you started we've listed a tiny fraction of the events taking place this weekend. Pick up the New York Times, Time Out New York or any other city newspaper or magazine to see what's happening over the next three days.

Brooklyn Academy of Music Bazaar/Dance Africa - Shop food, crafts and fashion. Enjoy poetry, music and dance in this outdoor market celebrating the African Diaspora.

Coney Island USA - Sample the Sideshow by the Seashore, brave the Cyclone, visit the Batting Range, race around Go-Kart City, or simply "people watch." There's no shortage of stuff to do here.

Fleetweek - The sailors have docked! Check out the Navy Flight Simulator, watch a parade, jam with the Navy Band during Fleetweek 2007 New York City.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art ("The Met") - Normally closed on holiday Mondays, The Met will be open on Memorial Day as part of its Met Holiday Monday program.

Strat Commer Named "NYer of the Week"

Strategic Communications student Alex Price has been named "NYer of the Week" by NY1 News, for his involvement in launching the non-profit organization New York City Ties, which comprises a group of young professionals working to raise awareness and funds for a myriad of local charities. Currently the organization is working with the Ronald McDonald House and Gilda's Club NYC. The inspiration for the organization was born out of Alex wishing to commemorate his father who died of a heart attack several years ago. “Coming up on that year anniversary, I reached out to a handful of my friends to do something, to host a fundraising event for the American Heart Association and I just wanted to give whatever proceeds that we made to them in his name,” said Price. To read more about the organization visit the NYer of the Week .
