It's Here! The Unofficial (and only) SCE Commencement 2007 "Yearbook"

Friends and family of SCE's graduating class turned out en masse to celebrate their loved one's accomplishments. Flip through the "yearbook" for a recap of the Class Day and University Commencement ceremonies.

The SCE graduating class hailed from the following graduate programs:

MS in Technology Management

For students diligently moving towards the light at the end of the tunnel in these programs and others, keep going, remember whatever your motivation for being in the program is (write it down and tape it to your bathroom mirror if you need to), keep your GPA up, and you'll get there before you know it!

And if you suspect you'll be graduating next year - because you have fulfilled satisfactorily the requirements of the School of Continuing Education and your program - make sure you know what to do (and when) in order to don the Columbia Blue cap 'n' gown. Visit the Graduating Students link within the Student Affairs website, talk with an advisor or your program director to make sure you're on track, keep your GPA up, stay informed, and never lose your sense of humor - it's what will get you through the hurdles!

Memorial Day Weekend Happenings

New York City streets tend to lose about half its pedestrians on Memorial Day Weekend, either to trips out of town, trips to the beach, or trips to the couch to watch movie marathons. But there are still plenty of urban adventures to experience for those that are staying close to the asphalt this weekend. To help get you started we've listed a tiny fraction of the events taking place this weekend. Pick up the New York Times, Time Out New York or any other city newspaper or magazine to see what's happening over the next three days.

Brooklyn Academy of Music Bazaar/Dance Africa - Shop food, crafts and fashion. Enjoy poetry, music and dance in this outdoor market celebrating the African Diaspora.

Coney Island USA - Sample the Sideshow by the Seashore, brave the Cyclone, visit the Batting Range, race around Go-Kart City, or simply "people watch." There's no shortage of stuff to do here.

Fleetweek - The sailors have docked! Check out the Navy Flight Simulator, watch a parade, jam with the Navy Band during Fleetweek 2007 New York City.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art ("The Met") - Normally closed on holiday Mondays, The Met will be open on Memorial Day as part of its Met Holiday Monday program.

Summer Grub

Dashing to class on an empty stomach is a bad idea, plain and simple.

School of Continuing Educations Honors Its Grads

On Tuesday, May 15th, the School of Continuing Education at Columbia University will honor the graduates of 2007 during a Class Day ceremony and reception where over 100 students from the Strategic Communications, Technology Management, Fundraising Management and Landscape Design M.S. programs are scheduled to toss their caps in the air. Acting Dean Peter Awn will welcome the candidates and their guests and Kate D. Levin, Commissioner, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, will deliver the keynote address. On Wednesday, May 16th, the University will confer degrees on over 12,000 students during the standing-room-only Columbia University commencement main event. And as is the tradition, an impressive line-up of speakers and honorees will be present to give this year's graduates a proper send off. Get Ready to Register for Summer 2007 Courses

You're next chance to register will take place between May 17th - 21st. Check Student Services Online (SSOL) to find out what your PIN and appointment times are. The University Registrar's Office usually posts appointments about 2 weeks before the start of the registration period, so if you check on don't see information, just make sure to check back frequently.

Science on Them, Drinks on You at the Science Café

Café Science is a series of informal discussions about some of the most pressing scientific questions of our day, led by Columbia University's foremost scientists. All events are held at Picnic Market Café on Broadway and 102 Street in New York City. The Summer 2007 series begins Monday, May 14th where Marine Geophysicist Maya Tolstoy will discuss "Earthquakes as life support on the seafloor" over steamy cups of java. No RSVPs necessary. Important Tips from the CU Office of Public Safety

The tragedy at Virginia Tech still looms in our collective memory. Since then, you might have asked yourself "what would I do in that situation?" In the event that you should find yourself in a similar situation, no matter where the location, Columbia University's Office of Public Safety has developed some basic tips for us to keep in mind.

If you are in a building when an event occurs, you should:
Secure immediate area:
-Lock and barricade doors
-Do not stand by doors or windows
-Turn off lights
-Close blinds
-Block windows
-Turn off radios and computer monitors
-Keep yourself out of sight and take adequate cover/protection (i.e., concrete walls, thick desks, filing cabinets - cover may protect you from bullets)
-Silence cell phones

Un-Securing an area:
-Consider risks before un-securing rooms
-Remember, the shooter will not stop until they are engaged by an outside force
-Attempts to rescue people should only be attempted if it can be accomplished without further endangering the persons inside a secured area.
-Consider the safety of masses-vs-the safety of a few
-If doubt exists for the safety of the individuals inside the room, the area should remain secured
-Know all alternate exits in your building

Be aware that the 854-5555 will likely be overwhelmed. Program the alternate Columbia University Public Safety line (854-2797) into your cell phone for backup or consider 911 or e-mail. Remember, most cell phones provide the ability to make an emergency call, even if they have a lockout feature. E-mail may also be an option if, under the circumstances, you are unable to speak. E-mail is monitored by Public Safety personnel.

What to Report:
-Your specific location-building name and office/room number
-Number of people at your specific location
-Injuries-number injured, types of injuries
-Assailant(s)-location, number of suspects, race/gender, clothing description, physical features, type of weapons (long gun or hand gun), backpack, shooters identity if known, separate explosions from gunfire, etc

Police Response:
-Objective is to engage assailant(s) immediately
-Evacuate victims
-Facilitate follow up medical care, interviews, counseling
-Investigation

The 20th Annual CU Film Festival begins today and runs until May 10th. The festival features 40 short films and 13 screenplays by Columbia's MFA students.

Sports Management Symposium "Crossing the Line" - May 1st

Columbia University’s MS in Sports Management program will host the first annual “Crossing the Line: Sports Ethics Symposium” on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Columbia campus. The symposium will seek to address some of the major ethical issues that are at the center of the growth and development of the sports business today. It will feature a panel discussion of prominent leaders in the sports, entertainment and business worlds and will be moderated by the famed baseball historian Peter Levine. Strat Comm Student Turns Pitch into Feature Article

What began as an assignment for one Strategic Communications student has turned into a feature length article in Wiretap, an online magazine featuring the next generation of journalists and activists.
