Using the Business S-Word -- STRATEGY-- for Sports

Mention the s-word -- strategy -- and thoughts go immediately to business issues and the boardroom. Strategy is easily used in the business context but it is just as easily ignored, forgotten, or possibly not even considered in the sports environment. If the s-word is mentioned in sports, typically it is in reference to upper management or the owners. Then, the objective is dollars and cents -- maximizing gate receipts, holding costs in line, and returning profit on investment. Yet, strategy can be applied on the field/on-court/on-ice; the tactics of strategy are just as relevant in the sports arena as in the business arena. Read more...

Summer and Fall 2007 Registration Update

Early Registration may be a thing of the past, but there's still time to register!

Mark your calendars for the next opportunity to register for summer and fall 2007 courses. For specific course information contact your program representatives or check your Columbia University email for messages they may have sent you recently. Also make a note of when the late registration period begins for the terms you are registering for, since this is when financial penalties will start to be enforced. Using your UNI and password, log into Student Services Online (SSOL) to find your appointment times and PIN and follow the registration instructions given.

Sports Management Symposium "Crossing the Line" - May 1st

Columbia University’s MS in Sports Management program will host the first annual “Crossing the Line: Sports Ethics Symposium” on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Columbia campus. The symposium will seek to address some of the major ethical issues that are at the center of the growth and development of the sports business today. It will feature a panel discussion of prominent leaders in the sports, entertainment and business worlds and will be moderated by the famed baseball historian Peter Levine.
